HOOVER, Ala. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished the Samford Intercollegiate in 13th place on Tuesday. Jake Erickson led the way with a three-round score of 228 and tied for 23rd individually. Erickson has led the Salukis in three of their last four meets.
SIU was hurt by its second round. The Salukis shot 318 in the second round, compared with a 305 and 303 in the first and third rounds, respectively. Three of the five Saluki golfers posted their worst round in the second round, which was split between the first and second day. SIU was unable to complete their second round on Monday, so the team finished early Tuesday morning.
Erickson shot an 81 in the second round but recovered to post an even-par 72 in the final round. Erickson was the only Saluki to meet par at the tournament. Joe Goelzhauser shot the second-best score for SIU, four strokes behind Erickson. Goelzhauser was the only Saluki to avoid a round above 80.
Jared Harp sandwiched two 76s around a second-round score of 81. Jeffrey Miller posted a 238, and George Tate poasted a 241 to round out the Saluki five.
SIU is back in action next Monday and Tuesday at the Grover Page Classic in Jackson, Tenn.
