ST. LOUIS -- Southern Illinois vaulter Cody Doerflein and thrower Jeneva McCall have been named the Missouri Valley Conference's male field and women's field athletes of the week, respectively, the conference announced Tuesday.
Senior Cody Doerflein won the men's pole vault competition Friday, April 20 at the War Eagle Invitational hosted by Auburn University. The senior took the title with a clearing of 17-04.50 to edge out competitors from Memphis, Auburn, Mississippi State, and Troy University.
Doerflein currently holds the top spot in the Valley with the mark of 17-06.50 that he recorded at the Ole Miss Invitational on March 31. With the effort, the DuQuoin, Ill. native raised his previous career best, the second-highest in Southern Illinois history, by a quarter-inch to currently rank him 16th in the nation.
Jeneva McCall continued her national dominance winning four events at the invitational. The senior recorded a throw of 195-0 in the discus to hold as the longest throw in the country. McCall went on to break her own facility record at the Hutsell-Rosen Track that she previously set at the 2011 War Eagle Invitational.
The winning throw of 218-07 marks the second time this season she has broken a facility record. McCall broke the facility record in the discus throw at the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex on March 31. Currently, the Dolton, Ill. native ranks second in the nation in the hammer throw and fourth in the shot put.
After the weekend's competition the Saluki women remained in the top-25 of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association's (USTFCCCA) rankings, jumping two positions to be ranked 21st in the country.
The Saluki track & field team will split up this weekend with athletes competing in both the Drake Relays and the Memphis Tiger Invitational.
