CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois senior track and field athlete Malaikah Love has been named a Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Love earned the recognition after her record-breaking weekend at the MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Wichita, Kan. The Carbondale, Ill., native broke her own SIU triple jump record with a leap of 43-03.25 to take the MVC title for the second consecutive season in addition to taking All-MVC honors with a second-place finish in the long jump.
The only Saluki to ever clear 43 feet in the triple jump, Love will finish her career at SIU having won four MVC outdoor titles and five indoor crowns. A two-time All-American in the pentathlon, she holds the MVC record in the pentathlon and the heptathlon as well as the SIU record in the indoor and outdoor triple jump. Love also ranks second in SIU history in the indoor and outdoor long jump.
A dental hygiene major with a cumulative GPA of 3.477, Love will compete in the long jump and triple jump at the NCAA West Regional May 24-26 in Austin, Texas.
