MARION, Ill. - Three Southern Illinois men's golfers finished in the top 20 at the Illinois State Amateur Tournament, held at The Links at Kokopelli in Marion. Jeffrey Miller led the trio and finished fifth overall. Incoming freshman Drew Novara finished ninth overall to give SIU two golfers in the top 10. Jake Erickson finished tied for 17th.
"I'm proud of the way our guys performed," head coach Leroy Newton said. "It shows how much work these guys have put in and how well they're playing. Hopefully, that will carry over into the fall season."
Miller shot a 72-hole total of 277 (-3), five strokes behind champion Quinn Prchal on the Par-70 course. Novara (281, +1) finished four strokes behind Miller, and Erickson (285, +5) finished four strokes behind Novara.
The field featured 118 golfers, 37 of which made the cut after the first 36 holes. Since all three golfers finished in the top 20 on the 6,981-yard course, all three are exempt from qualifying for the 2013 State Amateur.
