Mayes earns MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors

ST. LOUIS-- Senior volleyball player Alysia Mayes has been selected as the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Mayes is being honored for her performance during the period of August 27-September 2.
A middle blocker for the Southern Illinois volleyball team, Mayes, a senior from Ashkum, Illinois, was named the most valuable player of the Active Ankle Challenge in St. Louis, while powering the Salukis to triumphs over South Alabama (3-1 on August 31), Saint Louis (3-1 on September 1) and Valparaiso (3-0 on September 1).
Mayes, who has a 3.765 cumulative grade-point average in exercise science, pounded 37 kills in three matches for an average of 3.36 per set and added a hitting percentage of .426. She also led SIU with 14 total blocks (four solos and 10 assists) and chipped in 11 digs and four service aces.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
