Salukis drop dual match season opener to Wisconsin

MADISON, Wisc.-- The Southern Illinois Univeristy men's tennis team fell to the University of Wisconsin Saturday in their dual match season opener.
Senior Brandon Florez was the lone win for the Salukis, defeating Billy Bertha 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 in No. 1 singles action at Nielson Tennis Stadium.
"Brandon played his best match as a Saluki today," said SIU head coach Dann Nelson. "It was a performance you expect out of your seniors and I am so happy and excited for him."
Jorge Cavero battled in the No. 3 singles compeition, falling in the tiebreaker 3-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Southern was swept by the Badgers in doubles action. Martijn Admiraal and Brandon Florez fell in the number one spot 8-5 while Badr Cherradi and Johnny Rigby were defeated 7-3 in the No. 2 position. Jorge Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek dropped the contest 8-2.
"We started off slow in doubles and got down big in all three matches and just need to get better starts to be more successful," said Nelson.
The Salukis return to the court tomorrow at 10 a.m. taking on the University of Missouri-Kansas City in Madison, Wisc.
"We need to have the entire team ready to play well on any given day and right now we aren't there yet and hopefully we can turn it around tomorrow."
