ST. LOUIS-- Southern Illinois University volleyball player Alex Rivera has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

The Vega Baja, Puerto Rico native helped Southern lock up a bid to the 2013 MVC Volleybal Championship.

Rivera led Southern Illinois defensively as the Salukis topped Evansville in three sets on Friday. The junior tallied 23 digs to average 7.67 digs per set.

This honor marks the second time this season Rivera has been recognized as the MVC Defensive Player of the Week.
