Ashton named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois softball player Kelsea Ashton has been named a Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league announced Thursday.

A junior third baseman for the Salukis, Ashton went 6-for-15 from the plate last week with two doubles and two runs scored to help SIU to a 4-1 record, including a perfect 4-0 mark in league play.

Ashton also recorded three sacrifice hits to bring her team-leading total to seven for the season. She also recorded three putouts and 10 assists from third base for a .929 fielding percentage. Ashton's efforts helped SIU move from a tie for seventh in the league up into fifth with a chance to move into the top four in the final weekend of regular season play.

A biological sciences major, Ashton holds a 3.63 cumulative GPA.
