AUSTIN, Texas -- Saluki track and field will send its 13 representatives for the NCAA West Region Preliminary Round Championships to the University of Texas on Thursday for a chance to qualify for the national meet.
The NCAA West Regional, run May 23-25, consists of the top-48 individuals of the region in each event, and the top-24 relays. To qualify for the national meet -- which will be held at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore., from June 5-8 -- participants need to finish within the top-12 in their events at their regional meet.
Southern will be represented by eight women in 12 events, and five men in six events. Saluki women qualified five throwers, three jumpers, three sprinters and one distance runner; and the men earned four throwers, one sprinter and one jumper.
Of the 18 qualifying marks, 16 of them are ranked within the top-ten at SIU all-time -- three of those are all-time SIU records, including J.C. Lambert's all-time and conference meet MVC record in the hammer throw.
Competing for the women are: Lauren Cheadle (long jump), Kenya Culmer (high jump, triple jump), Sadie Darnell (3000 meter steeplechase), Kim Fortney (shot put, hammer throw), Ashley Gaston (shot put, discus), DeAnna Price (hammer throw), Tess Shubert (400 meter hurdles) and Amiris Warren (100 meter dash, 200 meter dash).
Competing for the men are: Matthew Benes (110 meter hurdles), J.C. Lambert (hammer throw), Dougie Palacious (triple jump), Bradley Sauer (hammer throw) and Curtis Wideman (discus, hammer throw).
Salukis participating in events on Day One tomorrow include Lauren Cheadle (long jump), Kim Fortney (hammer throw), DeAnna Price (hammer throw), Tess Shubert (400 meter hurdles prelims) and Amiris Warren (100 meter dash prelims) on the women's side, and Curtis Wideman (discus) representing the men.
Action at Day One of the NCAA West Regionals begins at noon on Thursday with the men's discus, where SIU's Curtis Wideman will compete.
