DES MOINES, Iowa -- Former Saluki and three-time NCAA Champion Jeneva McCall earned a spot on Team USA to compete at the World Championships after her second-place performance in the hammer throw Saturday at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.
McCall's best throw of 74.00m (242-09) was briefly the best throw in the US for 2013 until eventual champion Amanda Bingston broke the all-time American record in the event with her winning throw of 75.73m (248-05). McCall and Bingston, along with Amber Campbell, will represent the US at the IAAF World Championships held in Moscow from Aug. 10-18.
Also competing in the hammer throw were former Saluki Gwen Berry (ninth place, 64.74m/212-05) and sophomore DeAnna Price (13th place, 62.09m/203-08).
McCall nearly earned a spot on Team USA in the shot put as well, but she fell just short in fourth place at 17.48m (57-04.25). Former Saluki Kim Fortney fell within a half foot of finals in the event at 16.43m (53-11.00), which was good for tenth place.
In addition to McCall at the World Championships, SIU will have two representatives at the Pan-American Junior Athletics Championships (Aug. 23-25) in freshmen Josh Freeman and Brandon Shemonia.
