Abe Martin Field renovation project is underway

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Demolition of the Abe Martin Field bleachers and dugouts began today in preparation for the $4 million renovation of the Southern Illinois baseball team's home field. The official ground breaking ceremony will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, June 25 at 3:30 p.m. at Abe Martin Field.
The ground breaking event is open to the public and will feature remarks from Chancellor Dr. Rita Cheng, Director of Athletics Mario Moccia and Head Coach Ken Henderson as well as Saluki Hall of Fame Coach Richard "Itchy" Jones, for which the new stadium will be named. The ceremony will be hosted by Saluki Hall of Fame broadcaster Mike Reis.
Construction of Abe Martin Field at Richard "Itchy" Jones Stadium is scheduled to be completed for the 2014 baseball season. The new stadium will feature a new artificial turf playing surface, stadium lights and security fence as well as a new grandstand, press box and dugouts.
