Volleyball drops first match at Marshall Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois volleyball team's late third set rally fell short in a 3-0 loss to Marshall in non-conference tournament action Friday in Huntington, West Virginia.
In the first two sets the Salukis (3-6) couldn't find a rhythm offensively, holding a .000 hitting percentage as the Herd (3-7) took victories 25-18 and 25-17.
The Salukis fought back in set three, playing Marshall to a close set. Southern came back from an early 8-0 deficit to take its first lead of the set at 17-16. The Salukis held the lead as late as 23-20 before Marshall closed on a 5-0 run to complete the sweep.
Jessica Whitehead tallied seven kills while Taylor Pippen recorded six kills on 13 attempts for an efficient .308 hitting percentage. As a team, the Salukis struggled offensively finishing the match with a negative hitting percentage.
Southern Illinois will look to bounce back tomorrow for day two of the Marshall Invitational. The Salukis will play Kent State at 9 a.m. CT followed by an afternoon match against Eastern Kentucky at 4 p.m. CT.
