CARBONDALE, Ill. — Saluki volleyball head coach Justin Ingram has announced the final additions to his 2014 recruiting class: Nellie Fredriksson of Sweden, Ashley Edelen of Louisville, Ky., and Alex Rosignol of Mount Carmel, Ill.
These latest additions complete Ingram's 2014 class, which also includes Abby Barrow (Metamora, Ill.), Anna Himan (Roland, Iowa) and Gabriella Shepherd (Channahon, Ill.), who were announced last November.
Nellie Fredriksson
Ängelholm, Sweden
Ällebergsgymnasiet (High School)
Intended Major: Undecided
Position: Spiker
Fredriksson, a 5-10 spiker from Ängelholm, Sweden, joins SIU's roster as the fifth international player on the squad. Currently, the Salukis have student-athletes from Israel (Yael Benjamin), England (Meg Viggars), Colombia (Andrea Estrada) and Puerto Rico (Alex Rivera). Fredriksson will come to Carbondale a seasoned veteran of the Scandinavian volleyball circuits. She was named the Nevza tournament best spiker and overall Most Valuable Player, and she has played at the highest club division of volleyball (Elitserien) since she was 14. Fredriksson was also a team captain on the Swedish junior national team for five seasons before joining the senior national team when she was 17.
"We are excited about our continued global recruiting efforts and the addition of Nellie," Ingram said. "She is a gifted and gliding jumper who can attack from anywhere along the net. Nellie's great footwork as an attacker and natural serve receiving ability will provide an immediate impact to our program."
Ashley Edelen
Louisville, Ky.
Assumption High School
Intended Major: Biomedical Science
Position: Libero
Edelen is a 5-4 defensive specialist and libero from Assumption High School in Louisville, Ky. She comes to Carbondale as a member of a two-time AAU National Championship team (Union Volleyball Club) that also finished third in the nation in 2011.
"Ashley is another athlete we were fortunate to work with at our Saluki Volleyball camps," Ingram said. "She will come to SIU from Louisville, a city with a long-standing tradition of producing hard working liberos. Ashley is a high IQ player whose best attributes are being fast and fearless."
Alex Rosignol
Mount Carmel, Ill.
Mount Carmel High School
Intended Major: Biological Science
Position: Middle Blocker
Rosignol, a 5-11 middle blocker, was a three-sport athlete at Mount Carmel High School — where she competed in basketball and track in addition to volleyball. She was a three-time team MVP and a 2012 All-State honorable mention honoree. Rosignol helped lead Mount Carmel to the regional semifinals her junior year in 2012, while also earning Big 8 All-Conference honors.
Rosignol was also a four-year varsity member on the basketball team that advanced to the Sweet 16 twice, won four regional championships and two conference championships. She also holds the school season and career rebounding records at Mount Carmel.
On the track she was a four-time state qualifier and holds the Mount Carmel school records in the 100 meter dash, 4x100 meter relay, 4x400 meter relay and the long jump.
"Alex is the definition of a true multi-sport athlete," Ingram said. "She competed for Mount Carmel High School in volleyball, basketball and track. Alex possesses great lateral speed and lift off the ground. Those attributes alone will help propel her as a middle blocker."
