CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University has added a 12th game to its 2014 schedule and will open the season on Thursday, Aug. 28, versus Taylor University at 7 p.m.
The NAIA Trojans finished 5-5 overall last season and 3-3 in the Mid-States Football Association. Taylor returns senior quarterback Jonathan Keith, who completed 61.7 percent of his passes last season and had 10 touchdowns.
The Salukis will play 12 regular-season games for only the third time in school history (2002 and 2013 were the others).
In addition to Taylor, SIU's non-conference games include road trips to defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Eastern Illinois (Sept. 6) and Big Ten Conference Purdue (Sept. 20), plus a home game versus SEMO (Sept. 13).
Southern Illinois returns 46 lettermen, including eight starters on offense and nine on defense from last year's team that finished 7-5 and tied for second place in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
