CARBONDALE, Ill. — After a few weeks off from competition the Southern Illinois University cross country teams are back in action on Saturday, when they will host the Saluki Invitational. The meet is set for a 10:00 a.m. start time at the SIU Cross Country Course, located west of Itchy Jones Stadium.
The meet will give head coach David Beauchem the chance to assess his full roster, with many of the returning veterans set to make their season debut.
"We are really looking forward to getting out and racing hard with the full roster," Beauchem said. "This is the 5K/8K course we will be on for the Missouri Valley Conference meet. Overall, it really is just a getting out and having a chance to compete and push hard."
The Saluki men began the season with a win over Indiana State in the Saluki Early Bird back in August. Michael Castel made his Saluki debut in the meet, taking first place in the 4K race. Juan Carrera also competed in the meet, finishing second right behind Castel. Returning veterans Nick Schrader and Oscar Medina will make their season debuts this weekend, with the duo beginning their campaign to a third straight MVC team championship.
The women's team finished a close second to the Sycamores in the season opener, but will be at full strength this weekend. Sadie Darnell, Kristen Levi, and Kelley Gallagher earned All-Conference First Team status last season and will open up their 2014 campaign this weekend.
Notable teams competing along side SIU this weekend include Southeast Missouri, Missouri State, and Rend Lake.
