SIU sweeps MVC cross country honors

CARBONDALE, Ill.- After a dominant performance this past weekend at the Saluki Invitational, Southern Illinois University cross country runners Oscar Medina and Kelley Gallagher were named Missouri Valley Conference cross country Athlete's of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Medina took first in the meet, completing the 8K race in a personal-best time of 24:25.71. His strong race helped the SIU men's team claim first place. He bested all competitors, finishing nearly 30 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Gallagher opened her junior campaign in outstanding fashion, claiming first place during the Saluki Invitational. Her time of 17:39.77 was a new personal best in the 5K. Gallagher paced the Salukis to a first-place team finish.
This marks the second week this season a Saluki runner has earned MVC honors. Michael Castel took home the first accolade of the season, after winning the Saluki Early Bird on Aug. 29.
SIU's next meet is the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 3.
