ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois offensive lineman Austin Olsen was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon. The honor is the first of Olsen's career, and he is the sixth Saluki to earn a weekly honor from the MVFC in 2015.
Olsen spearheaded an effort for the SIU offensive line that allowed the Salukis to pile up 673 yards of total offense in a 73-26 win over Missouri State on Saturday night at Saluki Stadium. Olsen was SIU's top graded offensive lineman on a unit that did not allow a sack for the third consecutive game. SIU set Saluki Stadium records for points, total yards and rushing yards in the dominant win. Behind Olsen, SIU rushed for 385 yards, the most for SIU against an MVFC opponent since 2004.
Olsen is the second Saluki to earn MVFC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors this season; Ethan Wirth earned his second career honor after SIU's game at Indiana. Olsen and Wirth join Mark Iannotti (Offensive POW, @IU), Austin Johnson (Special Teams POW, vs. Liberty), Daquan Isom (Newcomer POW, vs. Liberty) and Brandon Williams (Defensive POW, vs. Liberty) as MVFC Players of the Week this season.
