ST. LOUIS - Saluki Football linebacker Chase Allen was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced Sunday afternoon. Allen blocked two fourth-quarter kicks and helped SIU overcome an 11-point deficit with less than six minutes to play against Youngstown State. SIU won 38-31 in overtime.
Allen played only the second half and overtime, but he blocked to kicks in SIU's 38-31 win over Youngstown State. Allen blocked a field goal and punt—both in the fourth quarter—and helped SIU rally from an 11-point deficit with less than six minutes remaining in regulation. His three blocks this season are tied for the team and league lead. He's one of just nine players in the FCS to block two kicks in a game this year.
Allen joins six other Saluki players to earn weekly honors from the MVFC in 2015. Austin Olsen (vs. MSU) and Ethan Wirth (@IU) MVFC Offensive Lineman Player of the Week honors. Mark Iannotti (Offensive POW, @IU), Austin Johnson (Special Teams POW, vs. Liberty), Daquan Isom (Newcomer POW, vs. Liberty) and Brandon Williams (Defensive POW, vs. Liberty) also have earned MVFC Player of the Week honors this season.
Southern Illinois hosts North Dakota State on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. CT in Saluki Stadium.
