PEORIA, Ill. – The Saluki volleyball team came away with its fourth straight win on Saturday night, topping the Bradley Braves, 3-1. SIU extends its record to 18-7 overall and 8-2 in the MVC.
Sophomore Nellie Fredriksson had another impressive night, leading the Salukis with 14 kills and only two errors on 28 attempts for a .429 attack efficiency. Abby Barrow also added to SIU's offense with 12 kills.
"Nellie was fantastic tonight. She had opportunities on both sides of the court to have an impact, and she was high kill and high efficiency throughout the night," head coach Justin Ingram said. "Having her lead our team in kills is a big bonus, and the offensive distribution as a whole to all of our attackers was a great job by our setters."
SIU's setters Meg Viggars and Hannah Kaminsky put up 26 and 27 assists, respectively. Taylor Pippen and Alex Rosignol benefitted from on-point sets, each hitting at high efficiencies, Pippen at .522 and Rosignol at .692.
SIU opened the match with a strong performance offensively, finishing the first set with 19 kills and a .385 efficiency. SIU maintained the lead through the frame, advancing to set point at 24-19. Bradley held the Salukis for three points before a kill by Viggars put SIU up 25-22 to take the frame.
Bradley continued to roll on the momentum from their final points in the first frame to come on strong offensively in the second. The Braves went on a six-point run to take a lead early in the set, and continued serve and pass effectively. The Braves hit 19 kills compared to SIU's 12, taking the set 25-21.
"Bradley was passing very well, their offense was tearing us up and then on the other side of it they served better than we did and were getting us off the net, so we were behind in that set," Ingram said.
Following the break, however, SIU came back with even stronger than before, hitting at over .400 in both the third and fourth frames. SIU's defense picked up as well, with five blocks and 37 digs in the second half of the match. Ashley Edelen and Tara Routliffe were efficient from behind the line, Edelen serving for seven points and Routliffe for five.
SIU took commanding wins in the final two frames, winning 25-16 in the third and 25-14 in the fourth.
"We're keeping an eye on how we're play8ing and how the team is responding to each match," Ingram said. "We're wanting to play well and put together a good, efficient, energized, great demeanor high level night each time that we play. Regardless of win or lose, we're looking to play well."
The Salukis will return to Davies Gym on Monday night to host Wichita State, who leads the MVC with a 10-1 record in conference play. Match time is 7 p.m.
