LAWRENCE, Kan. - The 2015 cross country season came to an end on Friday for Southern Illinois, as Oscar Medina and Krista Menghini raced their last meet in a Saluki uniform at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet in Lawrence, Kan.
Medina led the SIU men's team, finishing the 10K race in 43rd place with a time of 31:15.3. It was the final cross country race for the Chicago, Ill., native, who has been one of the best in school history. Josh Maier finished after Medina, placing 79th with his time of 31:45.3, while Brandon Shemonia finished 129th.
"Oscar put himself in a great position to qualify," SIU coach David Beauchem said. "He finished 43rd, but that wasn't how he raced. He could have sat at 22nd, but he went for it. Brandon was flat today, but he has had a great season. Today just wasn't his day. Josh raced well today. It was a great experience for him."
Krista Menghini wrapped up her final race with a 124th place finish in the 6K race with a time of 22:26.4. Menghini was Southern's top runner all season and she ends her Saluki career with another strong performance.
"Krista raced hard today and has had a great career," Beauchem said. "She put in a full effort every day. She has a lot to be proud of as a great Saluki cross country and track & field student-athlete."
Student-Athletes competing in cross country will also compete for the SIU track and field team. Their season will begin on Dec. 5, at the Saluki Fast Start in Carbondale, Ill.
