CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team will be looking for its third-straight win Wednesday night, as UT Martin visits the SIU Arena. The Salukis and Skyhawks will tip-off at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
The Salukis are looking for a repeat of last year's performance at Martin, Tenn., when SIU surprised UT Martin in its season opener by shooting 51% from the field and out-rebounding the Skyhawks, 43-27 en route to an 87-78 win.
"We deserved to win that game," said head coach Cindy Stein. "That's where I was very pleased with the way we started, we worked extremely well together, we played outstanding defense and we pushed the ball up in transition really well."
The 2015-16 Skyhawks look markedly different from the team the Salukis defeated last season, with only four student-athletes from that team on this year's roster. Jessy Ward returns, and is averaging 18.0 points per game while shooting 47.6% from behind the arc.
As a team, the Skyhawks are averaging 72 points a game, and shooting 43.8% from the field. However, opposing teams are averaging 72.5 points per game, shooting 50.7% from the floor, and out-rebounding UT Martin by an average of close to 13 rebounds per contest.
"(UT Martin) will let you score, but they have some really good shooters," said Stein. "We've got to play defense in all five spots."
The Salukis currently lead the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) in offensive rebounds (14.3/game), rebounding margin (+0.7) and blocked shots (6.0/game).
