MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team will travel to the University of Memphis (3-2) for a 2 p.m. tipoff at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Last year, the Salukis defeated the Tigers, 82-75 at the SIU Arena, and are looking for their first win at Memphis since a 71-56 victory on Nov. 26, 1985.
"I've always enjoyed playing Memphis," said head coach Cindy Stein. "Coach McFerrin is a very good, dear friend of mine, she's a great coach and I know they are going to be really well prepared. Thats what I like about playing Memphis- they will try to take different things away from us and I always think that makes you better. When you play good teams that are well-coached, like UT Martin and Memphis, win or lose, it makes you a lot better as a team."
The Tigers are coming off a 61-53 loss at Little Rock on Friday, but are 3-0 on the year at home. Memphis is led by senior Ariel Hearn, who scored her 1,500th career point in the Tigers 70-55 win over Jacksonville State on Nov. 13.
"We know (Memphis) is very tough at home," Stein said. "They are a tremendous defensive team; taking care of the ball, keeping turnovers down and rebounding the ball are going to be really important against a terrific, athletic Memphis team."
The Salukis (2-2) are looking to regroup after suffering their first home loss of the season on Wednesday, a 70-63 setback at the hands of UT Martin. Memphis marks the third-straight opponent from the state of Tennessee for SIU, and the matchup on Sunday is the 17th meeting between the two programs dating back to the 1973-74 season.
