MADISON, Ill. - In almost exactly a month, the Saluki women's golf team will travel to Burlington, Iowa to compete in the MVC Championships. With that as the team's focus, the Salukis have added a dual match to their schedule, taking on SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday in Madison, Ill.
"I scheduled this because I figured more experience can only help us," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "We haven't been scoring as low as we can, so I figured an extra tournament - even though it's only one day - will help us get more competitive rounds in so we can be more ready for the conference championship."
SIU will host the Cougars at Gateway National Golf Links, a links-style course only 10 minutes outside of St. Louis. Gateway National is a par 71 course that plays 7,178 yards from the longest tees.
"We're excited to play Gateway National. From what we've heard it's a really good golf course," Mihelich said. "I think with our conference being in Iowa where it will be windy and flat that this will be a good course to help us prepare with similar conditions."
The Salukis hosted SIU-Edwardsville last fall at the Saluki Shootout. The Cougars claimed second place with a 606 score behind the Salukis in first with 601. SIU-Edwardsville will visit Carbondale again next week for the Saluki Invitational beginning on March 29.
Six golfers from each school will compete in Sunday's rounds, split as three foursomes. Tee time is set for 1 p.m.
