CARBONDALE, Ill. - Battling winds of over 20 miles per hour, the Saluki women's golf team finished Day One of the 21st annual Saluki Invitational in second place with a 325 team score. SIU junior Mattie Lindner leads the team and the tournament, shooting a 74 on the day.
SIU-Edwardsville holds a seven-stroke lead over the Salukis, leading the tournament after one round with a 318 score. The Salukis' B Team finished the day in third place with an overall score of 333.
Only four of the 62 golfers finished the day shooting under 80, largely due to the blustering winds, with Lindner leading the pack at only two over par. This is the fourth tournament this year that Lindner has led SIU after the first round of play.
Alice Ho finished with the Salukis' next-lowest score on the day, finishing with an 81 on SIU's B team to tie for ninth overall. Ho finished the day with two of the Salukis' five birdies, with Lindner, senior Kris Grimes and sophomore Xianmei Jin contributing one each.
SIU will return to Hickory Ridge Course on Monday to try to finish strong and earn the team's fourth-consecutive Saluki Invitational victory. The second and final round of the Invitational begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. If the Salukis are able rally back for the victory, head coach Alexis Mihelich will remain undefeated at home in her four year tenure.
