ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois University junior Kim Nebo has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar- Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday, Jan. 5. The honor is the first of Nebo's career and marks the second time this season that a SIU women's basketball student-athlete has been honored as the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Southern Illinois swept a road trip to Drake and UNI--both teams picked to finish in the top-3 in the MVC this season, and Nebo averaged 6.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in the two wins, in addition to her lock-down defense. Nebo held preseason MVC Player of the Year Lizzy Wendell to 1-for-13 shooting through three quarters in SIU's win at Drake, and also grabbed 15 rebounds in that game, the most by any MVC player this year outside of teammate Dyana Pierre.
The Katy, Texas native currently ranks 16th in the Valley in rebounding (5.4 rpg) and eighth in offensive rebounds per game (2.4) while academically owning a 4.0 GPA as a biological sciences major.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
Previously this season, redshirt junior Rishonda Napier took home the award, becoming the first Saluki to earn Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors since Christine Presswood did so during the 2009-10 season.
The Salukis host the Bradley Braves on Friday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. in the Black Out Cancer game. The team will wear special Under Armour jerseys that have already been auctioned off to raise money for Southern Illinois Healthcare. Fans can purchase tickets on-line at SIUSalukis.com, by phone at 877-SALUKIS or in person at the Arena ticket office.
