CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois volleyball team will host the Evansville Purple Aces Saturday in Davies Gym in a contest that will be broadcast on ESPN3. The Salukis are coming off their second conference loss of the season, having lost a three-set decision at Wichita State on Monday.
The Opponent
• Evansville comes to Davies having lost their last eight matches, with their last win, a 3-1 victory over Nicholls State, coming on Sept. 17, 2016. Mildrelis Rodriguez will lead the attack for the Aces, as she has 217 kills on the season and averages 2.86 kills/set.
The Series
• SIU holds a 41-11 advantage over Evansville in a series that dates back to 1983, with the Salukis riding an eight-match win streak over the Purple Aces. The last SIU loss, a 3-0 defeat at Evansville, came on Nov. 28, 2011. The Salukis have also won nine-straight at home over the Purple Aces, with Southern's last loss to Evansville at home coming on Nov. 10, 2006.
Team Notes
• The second edition of the NCAA RPI report for the 2016 season has been released and the Salukis are one of two Valley schools in the top-50. Wichita State leads the league at No. 40, while SIU comes in at No. 50. Both UNI (No. 64) and Missouri State (No. 74) appear in the top-75.
• Andrea Estrada needs 14 kills to reach 1,000 for her career. The redshirt junior would become the 14th Saluki all-time to reach the 1,000 kill-plateau, and the fifth to do so during their junior season. Estrada has needed 84 matches (315 sets) to reach 986 kills for her career, and provided she reaches 1,000 in the next five matches, will become the third-fastest in school history in terms of matches played to reach the mark. Her 986 kills are the 13th-most of any junior (or younger) in NCAA D1, and the 85th-most overall.
• Four Salukis have reached the 1,000-kill mark during their junior season. Here they are in order of how quickly it took them to do it.
Dana Olden (1989-92): 76 matches/293 sets
Kristie Kemner (1999-02): 80 matches/274 sets
Andrea Estrada (2013-pres.): 84 matches/315 setsÂ
Marlo Moreland (1995-98): 89 matches/286 sets
Jennifer Berwanger (2006-10): 96 matches/342 sets
• SIU ranks in the top-10 nationally in several categories. The Salukis rank third in team assists with 1,038, trailing only Butler (1,160) and Towson (1,069) in the category. Southern currently ranks fifth in team kills (1,087) and 10th in team total blocks (200).Â
• Hannah Kaminsky became the fifth Saluki to reach the 3,000 career assist plateau earlier this season, while Meg Viggars joined the 2,000-assist club with her 23 assists in the win over Illinois State on Saturday. It marks the first time in program history that the Salukis have two setters with 2,000-plus career assists on the same team.
• The Salukis hit a season-best .607 in set one of their three-set loss to Wichita State on Oct. 10. It marked the first time since Sept. 19, 2009 that SIU has hit .600 or better in a single frame.Â
• Southern has hit .400 or better in 15 sets this season, and boast a 12-3 record in those sets. In the last eight seasons combined the Salukis have a .962 winning percentage (102-4) in sets in which they hit .400 or better, including a stretch from 2009-2014 in which SIU won 66-straight sets that they hit .400 or better in. The last match that the Salukis didn't record an ace in was the last SIU match prior to Ingram's arrival, a Nov. 19, 2011 loss to Northern Iowa.
Player Notes
• Kolby Meeks is hitting .386 this season, the third-best hitting efficiency in the conference and the 35th-best in NCAA D1.
•Alex Rosignol leads the conference, and is 25th in the nation, in total blocks with 90. She also leads the Valley in blocks per set at 1.20/set.Â
• Assuming Meg Viggars plays Saturday against Evansville, it will be the 119th match of her career. She will move into a six-way tie for 7th on SIU's all-time list and has played in the 24th-most matches in NCAA D1 at 118. All told, Viggars has played in 444 sets during her SIU career, the sixth-most in school history. If she plays in two sets Saturday, she will pass Dana Olden (1989-92) for fifth on SIU's all-time list.
• Viggars is also just four digs from passing Mary Maxwell (1980-83) for sixth on SIU's all-time list and should crack the top-10 in assists over the weekend, needing just 13 to pass Sue Sinclair (1984-88) for 10th all-time.
• Hannah Kaminsky needs to play in two sets this weekend to pass Chandra Roberson (2006-09) for eighth on SIU's all-time sets played list. Kaminsky has played in 429 sets so far during her four seasons. She also needs just two service aces to move past Kristy Elswick (2005-08) for 13th on SIU's career list.
• Ginger Perinar has notched 10 or more attacks in four-straight matches, and eight matches total this season.
• Estrada recorded 10 kills in the loss to Wichita State Monday, marking the 13th time she's finished in double figures this season.
• Mariana Pilon registered a pair of aces in the win over Illinois State, recording multiple aces for the second time this season and the seventh time in her career.
• Nellie Fredriksson recorded a pair of blocks in the win over Indiana State, and has tallied multiple blocks in nine matches this season.
• McKenzie Dorris tallied two blocks in the win over Indiana State, and has now recorded multiple blocks in all 11 matches she's appeared in this season, and in 40 of 55 matches for her career.
• Abby Barrow has recorded 10+ kills in 10 matches this season, having narrowly missed out on adding to that total in each of her last two matches, as she's finished with nine kills in both matches. Barrow's 3.57 kills per set average during conference play is the best on the team, and the fifth-best in the conference.
• In the three-set win over Indiana State, Ashley Edelen tallied 10 digs. It marked the fifth-time this season Edelen has cracked double figures in digs.
• Rosignol hit .500 (10-2-16) in SIU's loss at Wichita State, which is the third-straight match, and the 11th this season, that the Mount Carmel, Ill. native has hit .500 or better. Her .362 efficiency currently ranks her fourth in the MVC.
• Abby Barrow and Andrea Estrada each had 20 kills in SIU's win over Missouri State on Sept. 26. It marked only the fifth time since 2000 that two Salukis recorded 20-plus kills in the same match, and the first time since 2012. On Oct. 12, 2012, Laura Thole and Alysia Mayes put down 22 and 20 kills, respectively, in SIU's 3-2 win at Bradley, and on Oct. 22, 2010, Jennifer Berwanger tallied 29 kills and Jessica Whitehead added 28 kills in SIU's four-set win over Evansville. Prior to the change to 25-point sets from 30-point sets in 2008, there were two instances of two Salukis notching 20-plus kills. On Aug. 31, 2002, Lindsey Schultz and Kristie Kemner put down 20 kills apiece in SIU's four set win over Southwest Texas St., and later that season on Nov. 23, Tara Cains tallied 27 and Kristie Kemner totaled 23 kills in Southern's five-set win over Missouri State in the MVC Tournament.
• In the win over Northern Iowa, head coach Justin Ingram won his 150th career match, and 90th while at SIU. He became the fourth head coach in Saluki history to reach the 90-win plateau, and is the quickest in the NCAA-era to reach the mark. Ingram needed just 142 matches to reach the mark, besting the 157 matches it took Debbie Hunter (1975-88) to do so.
• The Salukis have had 21 triple-doubles in school history dating back to 1982, of which Viggars accounts for more than one-third of them (9). Her 11 kills, 16 digs and 38 assists against SEMO on Sept. 21, 2014 was the first triple-double by a Saluki since Holly Marita tallied 10 kills, 12 digs and 51 assists against Iowa on Aug. 30, 2003. Of the 10 times that a Saluki has finished in double-figures in kills, digs and assists, nine of them have come from Viggars. When Viggars recorded her sixth career triple-double at Butler on Sept. 19, 2015, she passed Dana Olden for most triple-doubles by a Saluki. Olden tallied five matches in which she reached double figures in kills, digs and blocks from 1989-92.
• The Salukis currently have three players hovering around the top-10 in school history for career double-doubles. Meg Viggars has recorded 53 career double-doubles, tied for the third-most in school history. She needs nine more this season to pass Kristie Kemner for most all-time. Andrea Estrada, who has 38 career double-doubles, ranks sixth and needs just two more to crack the top-five all-time. Hannah Kaminsky, who has recorded 29 assists-digs double-doubles, moved into ninth all-time after her double-double against Illinois State Saturday.
