Maroon takes Fall World Series with 7-3 win over Black

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Maroon team won Saluki Baseball's Fall World Series with a 7-3 win over Black on Saturday morning at Itchy Jones Stadium. About 50 fans were on hand to see the scrimmage.Â
Greg Lambert led the way for the maroon team in the series deciding Game 3. Lambert went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Will Farmer went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Austin McPheron threw 3.1 scoreless innings for Maroon, allowing only two hits. On the Black side, Ryan Smith went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs; and Drew Curtis went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.Â
In the three-game series, seven of the 15 hitters recorded at least five hits. Will Farmer (7-for-14), Greg Lambert (4-for-14), Logan Blackfan (7-for-13), Ryan Smith (6-for-11), Hunter Anderson (5-for-10) and Drew Curtis (5-for-10) all hit at least .400.Â
Southern Illinois is coming off a 31-win season in 2016, the biggest turnaround in Division I baseball. The 2017 Salukis return 88 percent of the starts from position players, 79 percent of pitching starts and 100 percent of weekend pitching starts from last year. The 2017 season will begin February 17, and the complete schedule will be announced later this week.
