Salukis drive past Sycamores in three sets
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois volleyball team earned a decisive sweep of conference foe Indiana State (7-10, 1-4 MVC), 25-19, 25-19, 25-22, at Davies Gymnasium Friday night.
With the win, the Salukis improve to 14-6 overall and 5-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
"Three sets to nothing is always advantageous," head coach Justin Ingram said. "Its not just two matches we have to play, but we have one on Monday as well at Wichita. I thought a few people did some great things today."
SIU's offense proved to be the best defense, as the Salukis tallied just four team blocks, but out hit the Sycamores, .314 to .222. It marks the sixth time this season SIU has hit over .300.
Redshirt junior Andrea Estrada led SIU with 15 kills on .414 hitting and eight digs. She now needs 32 kills to become the 14th Saluki with 1,000-career kills. Junior Nellie Fredrikkson finished with 10 kills on .400 hitting, while Viggars added eight kills to go along with 26 assists and six digs.
Freshman Ginger Perinar added eight kills on 19 attempts with one service ace in two sets Friday night. Perinar came on in relief of junior Abby Barrow, who came into the contest having led the Salukis in kills in all five MVC matches this season.
"Ginger has been our first hitter off the bench," Ingram said. "She's doing great things in practice and really earning her playing time. She came in for Abby, who was just a little off in that first set. That's the good thing about our team right now. We have the bodies and the talent to make a substitution to fill the gap. We have that luxury this year."
Senior Hannah Kaminsky racked up 20 assists and six digs, while classmate Mariana Pilon finished with a match-high 19 digs. Junior defensive specialist Ashley Edelen chipped in 10 digs.
"Our reception was, for the most part, consistent all night," Ingram said. "We were fielding two- and three-point passes, which are good and perfect passes, where we could set the right side. We pushed a lot of balls to the right side antenna. We look at that as being good distribution to the pins. All in all, a pretty good offensive performance that was above our standard as far as attack efficiency and kills per set."
The Salukis averaged 17.6 kills per set, well above their 13.24 kills/set average, and sided out 75% of the time.
SIU returns to Davies Gym on Saturday night to face Illinois State in a battle of teams tied atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
