The Southern Illinois men's golf team placed 13th out of 14 teams at the LSU Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge, La. on Sunday. Â
The Salukis entered today's third and final round in a tie for seventh place, but they slipped six places after shooting a combined 35 strokes over par. SIU (301-310-323 = 934) finished the two-day event at +70 and 31 strokes ahead of last-place Navy. Host LSU (279-292-282 = 853) ran away with the tournament title on its home course at The University Club, out-pacing runner-up North Texas (295-298-295 = 888) by 35 strokes.Â
The No. 5-ranked Tigers claimed the top four spots on the individual leaderboard. Southern's top finisher was Peyton Wilhoit (79-74-76 = 229), who tied for 31st place at 13-over par. Luke Gannon (+19), Carson Seals (+20), Brandon Carlson (+22) and Matt Greenfield (+85) rounded out the scoring for SIU.
In college golf, the top four scores count for each team and the fifth score is discounted. The Salukis did not have to count any scores above 80 in the first round, but today they had to count an 84 and an 85, which took them out of the running for a top-five finish in what was a tightly contested tournament after the first 36 holes.
