Cross Country wraps up 2016 season at NCAA Midwest Regional

Southern Illinois University cross country runner Josh Maier capped off his sophomore campaign with a 48th place showing at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Iowa City, Iowa.
Southern competed against defending men's national champion Oklahoma State, and five other nationally ranked teams at the event as well as runners from other Missouri Valley Conference teams.
Maier, one of five runners competing for the Salukis, clocked a time of 31:16.4 in the 10K race while junior Jonathan Vara placed 113th at 32:27.9.
The women's raced kicked off the regional meet, with junior Natalia Hajduk pacing the Salukis and finishing 128th with a time of 22:14.1.
Junior Shannon Effron came in 149th with a time of 22:32.4 while junior transfer Kelly O'Shea finished her first year in the maroon and white placing 159th with a time of 22:40.4.
Cross Country head coach Kevin Cataldo finished off his first season as head coach. He says the focus is now on track and field.
"Coach (Kathleen) Raske has been very helpful and supportive, its been great getting to know the team," Cataldo said. "Its going to be exciting leading into the indoor season once indoor track and field starts."
