Sam Straub named MVFC Offensive Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS – Southern Illinois sophomore quarterback Sam Straub was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Sunday night. Straub threw for a school-record 450 yards in a 44-34 win over No. 23 Western Illinois on Saturday.

Straub went 30-for-51 and had four touchdown passes in the comeback win. After SIU trailed 31-14 early in the third quarter, Straub went 13-for-23 for 259 yards and two touchdowns the rest of the second half to lead the comeback. Straub's 450 yards passing broke a 10-year-old school record and ranks ninth in conference history. Â

The previous SIU record for passing yards in a game belonged to current head coach Nick Hill, who passed for 436 yards against Northern Iowa in 2007.

SDSU linebacker Dallas Brown earned Defensive Player of the Week. South Dakota's Miles Bergner (P/K) earned Special Teams Player of the Week, and Youngstown State running back Joe Alessi earned Newcomer of the Week.

Straub is the third SIU player to earn a weekly award from the MVFC this season and the first to earn Offensive Player of the Week. Josh Straughan earned MVFC Newcomer of the Week twice, and Jeremy Chinn also earned Newcomer of the Week.
