ST. LOUIS – Southern Illinois junior guard Kylie Giebelhausen was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week while freshman forward Lauren Hartman earned MVC Newcomer of the Week honors, the league announced Monday night.
It marks the third time SIU has swept the MVC weekly awards since the Valley began honoring a Newcomer of the Week prior to the 2003-04 season, and the first time the Salukis have done so since the 2011-12 season.
Giebelhausen averaged 18.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game while leading SIU to a pair of non-conference wins. The East Peoria, Ill. native poured in a career-high 22 points in SIU's 70-63 home-opening win over Murray State. Giebelhausen made 8-of-15 shots, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in 37 minutes of play. She added 15 points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks in SIU's 64-61 win over Purdue, helping SIU to its first win over a Power 5 conference school since 1993.
Hartman becomes the first Saluki to earn Newcomer of the Week honors since her teammate, Rishonda Napier, won it for the week of January 28, 2013.
The Tremont, Ill. native averaged 14 rebounds per game in SIU's 2-0 week, as she snagged 12 boards to go along with five points and a pair of steals in 27 minutes during SIU's win over Murray State on Thursday. She added 16 rebounds, including 10 in the first half to go along with four points, three blocks and a steal in SIU's win at Purdue.
The Salukis are back in action Wednesday, Nov. 23 when they travel to Edwardsville, Ill. to take on the SIUe Cougars. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
