Salukis rally for four-set win at Indiana State

The Southern Illinois volleyball team bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat Indiana State 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-18, 31-29) Saturday night in Terre Haute, Ind.
SIU fell behind early, hitting just .091 in set one to fall 25-19. In set two, Indiana State (10-16, 4-11 MVC) appeared to be in control, taking a 21-18 advantage before the Salukis rattled off seven-straight points to win the frame. With momentum on their side, SIU took set three, 25-18, and rallied from the brink of a fifth set, coming back from being down 24-19 to take set four, 31-29.
The win improves SIU to 20-9, and 11-4 in conference play. It marks the fourth time in five years that the Salukis have won 20+ matches and it is also the 100th win for Justin Ingram as SIU's head coach. He becomes the fastest in program history to reach the century mark, needing just 156 matches to do so.
SIU was led by senior McKenzie Dorris. The Metropolis, Ill. native finished with a career-high 12 kills on 18 swings for a .611 hitting efficiency, and added a career-best nine blocks. Redshirt junior Andrea Estrada finished with a team-best 14 kills and 13 digs for her 42nd career double-double.
Senior Hannah Kaminsky notched her second-straight double-double, as she tallied 28 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Alayna Martin added 16 assists and six digs, while Mariana Pilon established a new career-best with eight assists to go along with 11 digs.
The Salukis hit at a .200 clip while holding the Sycamores to a .110 hitting efficiency. SIU also tied a season-best with 15 total blocks.
A kill by Estrada gave Southern a 3-1 lead in the opening set. Back-to-back kills by Alex Rosignol made it 13-11. Indiana State sided out on the ensuing serve to draw to within one, but three-straight points by the Salukis, highlighted by a kill by Estrada made it 16-12. The Sycamores once again responded to get to within one (18-17) before embarking on an 8-1 run to close out set one, 25-19.
A service ace by Kaminsky and a double block by Dorris and Ginger Perinar gave the Salukis a 2-0 advantage in set two. A kill by Nellie Fredriksson sparked a 4-0 run to make it 14-10. The Sycamores battled to tie the score at 16-16, forcing the Salukis to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Salukis responded with a kill by Estrada to take a brief 17-16 lead, but the Sycamores answered to make it 21-18. It was SIU's turn to counter, as Kolby Meeks put down a kill that returned the serve to the Salukis. With Pilon at the service line, SIU rattled off seven unanswered points to take the frame, 25-21.
The third set was tied 10-10 before Dorris served SIU to a 14-10 lead. Back-to-back kills by Fredriksson made it 17-14, and a solo stuff by Barrow put SIU ahead, 20-16. From there, the Salukis scored three-straight points to make Indiana State's deficit seven (23-16), and a kill by Estrada gave SIU a 25-18 set three win.
After the Sycamores opened the fourth set with back-to-back points, the Salukis ripped off five-straight points with Barrow at the service line to lead 5-2. The two sides traded 3-0 runs, as Indiana State tied the score 5-5, before SIU scored three-straight behind two kills from Estrada to make it 8-5. After a kill by Fredriksson made it 10-8, the Sycamores scored six-straight to take their largest lead of the set at 15-10. The lead remained five at 24-19, but a sideout kill by Estrada gave the Salukis one last chance. They responded with four-straight points to tie the score at 24-24, and after the two sides traded points, back-to-back blocks gave Southern a 31-29 win.
The Salukis return to action Friday, Nov. 11 when they travel to Evansville, Ind. to take on the Purple Aces.Â
