CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois women's basketball team utilized a big third quarter to pull away from the Memphis Tigers Sunday afternoon at the SIU Arena.
The Salukis (5-4), who went into halftime down by five and trailed by eight with 5:31 remaining in the third quarter, erupted for an 18-0 run to close out the third quarter, a stretch in which Southern shot 7-of-9 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from long distance.
"I'm very proud of this team, we were able to regroup at half and come back stronger and more committed to the game plan," fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "We stuck together better, we communicated better and it paid off in a big third quarter that helped put us over the hump."
SIU outscored Memphis, 24-to-9 in the third frame, as the Salukis almost doubled their point total in the quarter.
Rishonda Napier led the way for the Salukis, as she notched the first points-assists double-double by a Saluki since Cartaesha Macklin did it against Chicago State on Dec. 21, 2012. It also marked the first time a Saluki has dished out double-digit assists since Macklin did so in 2013.
"(Rishonda) was very determined to make the right thing happen," Stein said. "I think there were a couple of times where she got herself in trouble, but I think she's getting smarter about what to do with the ball. Weather it's a skip pass or throwing it off an opponent's leg, she was pretty alert to how the defense was rotating and who would be open."
The preseason All-MVC selection finished with 17 points, a career-high 11 assists and two steals to notch her second career double-double. She was a one-woman press-breaker for most of the afternoon, as she weaved out of the Tigers trap to find the open shooter.
"I have a lot of confidence in my shooters and today they didn't miss," Napier said. "They actually made me look really good today. I walked over to Kylie at one point and said, 'keep making me look good.' And that's exactly what (Kylie), Carlie and Kristen did in that third quarter."
Carlie Corrigan finished with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. 14 of her 20 points came off of passes from Napier, including all four three-pointers.
"I know Rishonda is an outstanding passer so she's going to give me the ball where it needs to be," Corrigan said. "I think the biggest thing was running to the right spot and making the right reads."
Kim Nebo and Kylie Giebelhausen both tallied eight points and eight boards, while Nicole Martin, making her second-straight start, chipped in eight points and seven boards.
The Saluki bench also came up big in the win, led by forward/center Ashley Hummel.
Hummel played six of her 13 minutes in the third quarter, scoring all four of her points and grabbing three rebounds during that stretch. With time winding down in the third, Hummel corralled a loose ball and put up a one-handed bank shot that went in as the buzzer sounded to put Southern ahead, 49-39.
The Tigers (3-6) cut SIU's lead to six on six different occasions during the fourth quarter, but could get no closer.
The Salukis shot 47.9% (23-of-48) from the field, including 52.6% (10-of-19) from three-point range in the win.
Southern will now have a full week off before its next game, as the Salukis will take part in the University of Missouri-Kansas City Tournament beginning on Monday, Dec. 19. SIU is set to tangle with the hosts, UMKC on Dec. 19, before taking on South Dakota the following day.
