CARBONDALE, Ill. - Members of the Southern Illinois University Track & Field program will span out across the country this weekend as most of the Salukis will headline Friday's Hoosier Hills Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., while select members will travel to Birmingham, Ala. to take part in the Samford Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Kyle Landon, Bradley Sauer, Josh Freeman, Kezia Martin, Louis Dotson, Franklin Adams, Chase Black, Chad Weaver, Nathan Schuck, Kacy Murphy, Katie Trupp and Cara Engel will compete at the two-day Samford Invitational. The Invitational is hosted at the Birmingham CrossPlex, the site of this year's NCAA Championships.
Southern comes off a strong performance in the Don DeNoon Invitational. Both the men's and women's team took first at SIU's final home indoor meet of the season, with the Salukis winning 14 event titles and setting 28 lifetime-bests. SIU Director of track & field/cross country Kathleen Raske was pleased with the performance and was happy to see so many Salukis had success showcasing their talent in front of their home crowd.
With this weekend the final tuneup before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships on Feb. 27-28, Southern is hoping to build off of its momentum while looking to improve upon their marks and times prior to the conference championships.
Sauer and Alexus Scott were each named MVC Field Athlete of the Week following their performances at the Don DeNoon Invitational.
Sauer earned his second-straight honors by tying his personal-best mark in the men's weight throw at the Don DeNoon Invitational this past Saturday. The Murphysboro, Ill. product threw a mark of 22.06m (72'-04.50") in the weight for his third event title in five tries this season. Sauer currently sits at the No. 5 spot on the NCAA leaderboard.
Scott picked up her first victory of the season in the weight throw, as well as a runner-up finish in the shot put at the Don DeNoon Invitational. Scott won the weight with a throw of 19.56m (64'-02.25"), and followed by throwing the shot 15.75m (51'-08.25"), finishing an inch out of first place. She is now ranked first in the conference in the shot put and second in the Valley in the weight.
On the men's side, Dotson picked up an impressive win in the triple jump, earning the top spot with a jump of 14.48m (47'-06.25") while Landon earned his third win of the season in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.17m (7'-01.50'').
Southern saw three people set new PRs in the 60 meter dash, as Tyrone Echols ran a personal best time of 6.86 on his way to winning the event. It marks the third-fastest 60m time in SIU history. Weaver (7.17) and Dotson (7.18) also set new PRs in the event.
For the women's squad, Martin got a win in the triple jump with a distance of 12.04m (39'-06.00") while Mystique Thompson came away with her second win of the season in the 60 meter dash, besting the field with a time of 7.55, which tied her PR.
