ST. LOUIS - Junior Kyle Landon was named both the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week and the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week while classmate Freya Block earned MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the Valley announced Tuesday.
Landon carries a 3.72 grade point average as an accounting major and kept his undefeated streak in the high jump alive at the Samford Invitational over the weekend. The Chester, Ill., native cleared 2.21m (7'-03.00") to win for the fourth time in four tries this season while also jumping a season-best 6.93m (22'-09.00") in the long jump to finish seventh.
It marks the second time this season Landon has swept both awards, and the Chester, Ill. product currently sits at the No. 5 spot on the NCAA leaderboard for high jump.
Block earned MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors for the first time of her career after setting a lifetime best in the weight throw at the Hoosier Hills Invitational on Saturday. The Neponset, Ill., native threw 20.22m (66'-04.25") to take second in the meet, and is now ranked 24th in the weight in the nation, and second in the MVC going into the conference championships on Feb. 27-28.
A small contingent of Salukis will next compete at the Eastern Illinois University Friday Night Special on Friday, Feb. 19.
