PALM DESERT, Calif.---Through one round of play at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, Southern Illinois' men's golf team is in 18th place.
The Salukis are within striking distance of the top-10. SIU shot a team score of the 309, which is just 11 strokes behind South Dakota State and Idaho, who are tied for ninth place. Wyoming, the tournament hosts, are in 13th place with a team score of 303, six strokes ahead of SIU.
Matt Greenfield and Peyton Wilhoit had the best rounds for the Salukis today. Both players shot a 76 in the opening round and are tied for 50th place. Luke Gannon is tied for 75th place, but is only two strokes behind Greenfield and Wilhoit. Brandon Carlson shot a score of 79 in the first round and is tied for 79th. Carlson only shot under-par on one hole in the opening round. He eagled the fourth hole, a 568-yard par 5.
Kansas leads all teams at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The Jayhawks shot an opening round score of 285 to pace the field. They are three strokes ahead of second place TCU. Individually, TCU's Sarosh Adi leads all golfers with a score of 67. Three players are tied for second with a score of 68.
The Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate will commence Saturday with the second round of play.
