TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Southern Illinois Track & Field opens its outdoor season this weekend at the 2016 John Mitchell Alabama Relays. Southern enters the meet fresh off a 23rd-place showing at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Saluki men's highest finish at the indoor championships since 1992.
The Alabama Relays open Thursday afternoon with the hammer throw and javelin competitions. The bulk of the meet is set for Friday and Saturday from Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium, which features a new nine-lane track that has a state of the art Beynon BSS -2000 track surface.
Other teams competing at the meet include Ohio State, Southern Mississippi, Georgia Tech, Mississippi and host Alabama.
Action begins Thursday at 1:00 p.m. with the men's hammer throw. The women's hammer begins at 4 p.m., highlighted by the season debut of returning NCAA hammer throw champion DeAnna Price.
"We're super excited to see DeAnna Price throw this weekend," said SIU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Kathleen Raske. "Based on what she's been doing in training and in the weight room, she's going to open up big."
Price, a native of Moscow Mills, Mo., is coming off an incredible season in which she was the NCAA outdoor hammer throw champion, MVC hammer throw champion, and threw a personal-best 72.30m (237-02) at the USA Track and Field Championships to take home second. In doing so, she qualified for the IAAF World Championships, where she finished 10th in her qualification group and 18th overall.
Thursday's competition will end with the women's javelin at 6:30 p.m. The triple jump will kick off Friday's field events, with the women jumping at 5 p.m. Running events are slated to also begin at 5 p.m. with the 4x200-meter relay.
Live results of the meet will be provided at pttiming.com, and a live stream of the event can be viewed on SEC Network+.
