CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois track & field teams will be spread out across the country over the next two days as the Salukis compete in a pair of meets. Two distance runners are slated to compete Friday at San Francisco State's Distance Carnival, while SIU's throwers are scheduled to take part in the Joey Haines Invitational, hosted by SEMO, also beginning Friday.
The ninth-annual Distance Carnival will feature the largest field in its history, with competitors from all three NCAA divisions, as well as teams from NAIA and junior colleges. All told, there are schools from 29 states, including teams from Mexico and Canada, with over 1,700 athletes competing in over 2,400 events at Cox Stadium in San Francisco, Calif.
Senior Oscar Medina and junior Brandon Shemonia will compete in the 10,000-meter run Friday at 9:50 a.m.
Last weekend, both Medina and Shemonia set personal-bests in the 1,500-meter run at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic, with Medina running the race in 3:50.93 to take third while Shemonia cut nearly three seconds off his previous-best time, finishing in 3:56.27 to place tenth.
The Joey Haines Invitational begins Friday afternoon with the Saluki women throwing the hammer at 3:30 p.m., followed by the men.
Southern will be joined by teams from Arkansas State, Memphis, and SIU Edwardsville, to name a few.
Day two will be the main day for individual action, with Southern competing in three field events. The shot put and discus will open field events at 11 a.m., while the Dawgs close out competition Saturday with the javelin, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
DeAnna Price, the reigning NCAA hammer throw champion, is coming off a weekend in which she threw 70.40m (231'-00") at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic to cruise to her second event title in as many tries. She was not only honored for the second-straight week as the Missouri Valley Conference's Women's Field Athlete of the Week, but she now has the top-two collegiate marks this season and leads the NCAA by more than 17 feet.
Alexus Scott, who finished ahead of Price in the shot put, won the event with a conference-leading toss of 16.15m (53'-0"). Price's throw of 16.04m (52'-07.5") ranks second in the MVC.
On the men's side, Josh Freeman won both the shot and the discus at SIU's home meet this past Saturday, throwing the shot 19.19m (62'-11.5") and the discus 53.59m (175'-10"). Freeman ranks first in the Valley, and sixth in the nation, in the shot, while the Fox River Grove, Ill., native is first in the MVC in the discus.
