ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois softball players Shaye Harre and Brianna Jones earned weekly awards from the Missouri Valley Conference, the league announced Monday. Harre was named MVC Player of the Week, and Jones earned MVC Newcomer of the Week.
Shaye Harre hit .571, slugged 1.000 and reached at a .667 clip in SIU's series win over Northern Iowa over the weekend. She went 4-for-7 with three doubles in the series while collecting two RBIs, two walks and a stolen base, all while playing perfect defense. She reached in six of her nine plate appearances. SIU and UNI combined for six extra-base hits in the series, and Harre had half of them, hitting doubles in all three games.
Brianna Jones pitched arguably the best weekend of her young career in SIU's series win over UNI. Facing a Panther offense that had 26 home runs in its previous 10 games, Jones limited the Panthers to a .170 average and zero home runs in 14.0 innings. She allowed only nine hits while striking out 14 and walking none. She had an 0.50 in two complete games, including her 10th shutout of the season in the series finale. With 10 shutouts this year, Jones has the most shutouts among all freshmen nationally. She lowered her overall ERA to 1.80, an MVC best.
Harre earned MVC Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time in her career. She was also named MVC Newcomer of the Week once in 2014. Jones earned MVC Newcomer of the Week for the third time this season; she has also earned MVC Pitcher of the Week three times. Jessica Heese is the third SIU player who has earned MVC Player of the Week honors this season.
SIU heads to Evansville for a single game at 5 p.m. on Wednesday before closing the regular season at Wichita State next weekend. SIU (30-17, 13-9 MVC) hosts the MVC Tournament at Charlotte West Stadium / Kay Brechtelsbauer Field from May 12-14.
