DeAnna Price finished ninth in the qualifying round of the women's hammer throw at the 2016 Olympics in Rio Friday night, and is one of 12 athletes to advance to Monday's final round.
The Moscow Mills, Mo., native and first-time Olympian began the evening with an opening round toss of 69.25m (227'-2"). She improved on that mark with her second attempt, throwing 69.52m (228'-1") to remain near the top of the leaderboard.
Price distanced herself further from the pack with her third and final toss of the evening, throwing 70.79m (232'-3"). It was the fourth-best throw of the first flight. The two-time NCAA champion will be joined in Monday's final by her countrywoman, Amber Campbell, who's first throw of 71.09m (233'-3") stood up and was the eight-best throw of the opening round.
It marks the first time since the 2000 Olympics that throwers from the U.S. have advanced to the final round of the women's hammer.
2011 SIU graduate Gwen Berry did not advance Friday, as she finished 14th overall with a mark of 69.90m (229'-4").
Price will throw for her shot at an Olympic medal on Monday beginning at 8:40 a.m. CT. Fans can stream the event here.
