Josh Straughan named starting quarterback

Fifth-year senior Josh Straughan will be the starting quarterback for the Southern Illinois football team in its season opener on September 3 at Florida Atlantic. Straughan transfered to SIU from Stillman College (Division II) before the spring 2016 semester.Â
At Stillman, Straughan passed for 5,470 yards and 53 touchdowns in three years as a starter. He earned All-Conference recognition as a junior in 2014, and he was a preseason All-American in 2015 but missed the season with an injury. After graduating in December 2015 with a 3.98 GPA, Straughan transfered to SIU and competed with redshirt sophomore Sam Straub for the starting quarterback position. Straughan is originally from the state of Washington, where he threw for 11,600 yards and 141 touchdowns in high school.
"Josh Straughan is going to be our starting quarterback for FAU," head coach Nick Hill said. "This has been a tough decision. Both of those guys are exactly what we want out of the quarterback position. Anytime you lose sleep over a decision like this--and we've tracked every rep since spring, that means that two guys are doing a good job. Both of them are going to have to be ready to play. We told them yesterday, and I like how Sam (Straub) has responded; I like how our team has responded. We will rally behind Josh. He has command; he has experience; and that's the way we're going to go."
"Coming from such a small high school, then going to Stillman, to here (at SIU), it's been a journey," Straughan said. "I'm just happy to be here with these guys, and hopefully I will help them win some games this year."
Southern Illinois opens the season at Florida Atlantic on September 3. The team's home opener is September 10 vs. Southeast Missouri. Tickets are available by calling 877-SALUKIS.Â
