The Southern Illinois men's golf team stands in second place after 36 holes on Day One of the Murray State Invitational on Monday, the team's first tournament of the fall season. With a team score of 564, the Salukis are 4-under par and trail tournament leader UT-Martin by just two strokes heading into tomorrow's final round.

Frankie Thomas
The highlight of the day came from SIU freshman Frankie Thomas, who fired a 7-under par score of 64 in the first round, tying the school record for best 18-hole score. Playing in his first collegiate tournament, Thomas' score did not count toward SIU's team total, because he entered the tournament as an individual. His 64 matches the school mark first set by Brian Norman on Sept. 14, 2004 at the Harris Fall Classic, and again by Drew Novara on Oct. 21, 2014 at the APSU Intercollegiate. Thomas is tied for third place out of 64 golfers, one stroke off the lead. He leads the field with 13 birdies.
Other top finishers today for Southern included Luke Gannon and Matt Greenfield, who carded identical 2-under par rounds of 140 (72-68).
