Landon, Block earn Valley honors

ST. LOUIS - Senior Kyle Landon was named both the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week and the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week while classmate Freya Block earned MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the Valley announced Tuesday.
Kyle Landon won the high jump at the Vanderbilt Invitational, and is now ranked third in the nation in the event. The Chester, Ill. native cleared 7'-3" (2.21m) on his third and final attempt to post his first win of 2017. He advanced with a first attempt clearance of 7'-1.75" (2.18m), and was the only jumper in the field to clear 7'-3".
It marks the fifth time indoors, and the eighth time in his career, that Landon has cleared 7'-3" or higher in competition. In addition to being tied for third in the nation in the high jump, he also leads the Valley in the event by more than four inches.
Block earned MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors for the third time this season, as she was the top-collegiate finisher in the women's weight throw at the Vanderbilt Invitational. She leads the conference in the event by more than two feet after she threw 64'-0.25" (19.51m) Friday night to finish second to 2016 Olympian DeAnna Price.
Block is currently ranked 19th nationally in the weight, and her mark Friday night was the fourth-longest toss of the Neponset, Ill. native's collegiate career.
The Salukis will next travel to Bloomington, Ind. to take part in the Indiana Relays on Jan. 27-28.
