Sam Straub named MVFC co-Offensive Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois football quarterback Sam Straub earned co-Offensive Player of the Week honors from the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the league announced on Sunday evening. Straub threw for 368 yards and four touchdowns in SIU's 42-7 Homecoming win over No. 15 Illinois State on Saturday.

Straub earned the honor alongside South Dakota's Chris Streveler, who threw for 337 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in the Coyotes win over Indiana State. Straub went 22-for-34 (65 percent) in the game against Illinois State and threw for four touchdowns without a turnover. His 368 yards passing ranked 10th in school history, and he became the first quarterback in school history with four career games with 4+ touchdown passes.

Straub also ran for 45 yards, and his 413 yards total offense rank seventh in school history. Straub now holds three of the top-nine total offense games in school history, and he's accomplished that in only nine starts. The MVFC honor is the second of his career; he also earned it after throwing for a school-record 450 yards last season against Western Illinois.

Straub is the third SIU player to earn a weekly honor from the MVFC in 2017. Ryan Neal earned MVFC Defensive Player of the Week after the win against Southeast Missouri, and Austin Olsen earned Offensive Lineman of the Week after Southern's loss at Memphis.

Along with Straub and Streveler, WIU's Brett Taylor (Defense), NDSU's Cam Pedersen (Special Teams), and NDSU's Jabril Cox (Newcomer) earned weekly honors from the league.

SIU travels to Indiana State on Saturday, Oct. 21. Kickoff in Terre Haute is set for 2 p.m. CT, and the game will be streamed on ESPN3. Southern is trying to snap a three-game losing streak to the Sycamores.
