With the completion of the 2018-19 signing day, the SIU Women's Golf Team added two new faces to the team for next season.
Â
Grace Renfer, from St. Louis, Missouri and Samantha Cabunag from Irvine, California, are the two newest members to be on the green with the Salukis next year. Head Coach Alexis O'Brien has great expectations for the two.
Â
Grace Renfer, a three-time All-Conference team selection, led St. Joseph's Academy to back-to-back Missouri State Class 2 Championships. She is ranked 8th individually in Missouri Class 2 and co-medaled at the Missouri vs. Illinois River Cup Challenge in 2017.
Â
"Grace loves the game and has such a dynamic personality," O'Brien said. "Her determination, course management, and drive to be the best golfer she can be will make her very competitive on the squad. Grace has a lot of tournament experience and that will transfer to college golf quite well."
Â
Renfer played in the 42nd Girls Junior PGA Championship in July and recorded her first hole in one on a 188 yard par-three in June. She was awarded the Accelerated Golf Tour High School Player of the Year in 2016 and 2017 and was named the Gateway Junior PGA Tour Player of the Year in 2015.
Â
Renfer intends to major in Physiology with a minor in Spanish.
Â
The second signee for the Salukis is Samantha Cabunag. Hailing from California, Cabunag just recently helped University High School become the 2017 California Interscholastic Federation State Champions. She is also a three-time member of the All-League FIrst Team.
Â
"Sammy has a fundamentally sound golf swing, she will be very accurate and will go low," O'Brien said. "She has a lot of tournament golf experience playing in Southern California year-round."Â
Â
In 2016, Cabunag took home first place in individual at the Long Beach Wilson Tournament and helped University to a three-peat win at the same tournament from 2015-2017. She was the Girls Golf Athlete of the Week by OCVarsity in September and qualified for the CIF Southern Section Individuals Qualifier.
Â
"Sammy was a competitive gymnast before focusing on golf and the skills she learned to compete individually in gymnastics will transfer over to golf," O'Brien said. "She knows how to compete under pressure, manage her heart rate and emotions, and really focus on the task at hand."
