MEMPHIS - Three scored in double figures for the Southern Illinois women's basketball team as the Salukis overcame a three-point halftime deficit to defeat the Memphis Tigers, 68-56 on Sunday, Nov. 18 inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The Salukis (2-1) made just 33.3% (11-of-33) of its attempts from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play and trailed by as many as seven. To make matters more difficult, the Tigers (1-3) out-rebounded the Salukis in the first half and held Preseason All-MVC selection Kylie Giebelhausen to 1-of-8 shooting.
"I felt like our kids were doing some really good things in the first half, It just came down to fundamentals," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "When we break down our fundamentals and rush shots, leave our feet and don't box out, you're going to get in a bit of a hole. We just reemphasized our fundamentals (at halftime)."
The Salukis got back to the basics in the second half and the results showed; SIU shot 62.5% (15-of-24) from the floor and out-rebounded Memphis, 20-to-14. Giebelhausen led the charge, as she made five of her six attempts in the second half, with no bigger shot then her deep 3-ball with 8:18 left in the third quarter that wrestled the lead back from the Tigers for good.
"What was good about Kylie today is she found different ways to score," Stein said. "She just does so many other things well. We told her to just focus on those things and to not focus on her shot because its going to come back. I told Kylie (after the UAB game) I could care less if she's 0-for-12, I still want her to keep shooting because I know what a great shooter she is."
Giebelhausen tallied 14 points, of which 12 came in the second half, and added five rebounds and four assists. Abby Brockmeyer notched her second-straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in 34 minutes while Nicole Martin finished with 14 points and seven boards.
Brockmeyer's second double-double in just her third career game makes her just the eighth Saluki freshman since 1983 to record multiple double-doubles during her freshman campaign. The Raymond, Ill. native is the first Saluki to do so since Dyana Pierre recorded nine double-doubles during the 2012-13 season.
"She anticipates extremely well and she has a quick spurt in her that helps her get her hands on a lot of basketballs," Stein said of Brockmeyer. "She's always around the boards and she knows her positioning. There was one part today where we were trying to get her the ball every time down the court because they were having a difficult time stopping her."
The win for the Salukis was their second-straight over the Tigers, and their first victory at Memphis since Nov. 26, 1985.
SIU returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at Southeast Missouri State. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
