It marks the first time since 2012 that SIU has placed two on the Scholar-Athlete First Team.
ST. LOUIS – Southern Illinois senior outside hitter Abby Barrow and senior libero/defensive specialist Ashley Edelen have been named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team, the league announced Tuesday.
It marks the sixth-straight season that the Salukis have placed at least one on the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team and have now had at least one earn recognition as a MVC Scholar-Athlete in each of the 25 years that the award has been handed out.
Barrow ends her career with her third-straight MVC Scholar-Athlete team selection, and her second-straight first team nod. She is just the seventh Saluki to earn three MVC Scholar-Athlete honors, as she joins Heather Heades, Deb Heyne, Kristie Kemner, Kim Golebiewski, Jennifer Berwanger and Taylor Pippen as the only in program history to have done so.
A physical therapy assistant major at SIU, Barrow holds a 3.8 cumulative grade point average and put down her 1,000th career kill vs. Loyola on Oct. 30 and ends her career ranked No. 14 in school history in kills. She tallied five 10-plus kill performances this season, including a season-high 16 in a three-set match at Missouri State (11/4). She notched 10-plus digs in 11 matches as a senior, including back-to-back 20-plus dig outputs against Evansville (9/29) and Indiana State (9/30). At the net, she registered at least one block in 13 of SIU's 27 matches, including six matches with multiple blocks.
Edelen was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First team for the first time in her career after a season in which she led the team in digs (4.20/set), finished second in aces (.26/set) and third in assists (.62/set). The health care management major at SIU holds a 3.86 GPA and ends her career with exactly 800 career digs after she recorded three in her final match at Valparaiso.
The Louisville, Ky. native more than doubled her career totals in digs, assists and aces during her senior year. She notched 10-plus digs in 25 of SIU's 29 matches, including 10 matches with at least 20 digs. She finished with a career-high 29 digs in SIU's 3-2 win over Evansville on Sept. 29.
The criteria for the scholar-athlete team balloting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, have played at least 75-percent of a team's games, and must carry at least a 3.20 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
