Kylie Giebelhausen scored her 1,000th career point in the loss to SIUE.
CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team had its two-game winning streak halted after a 57-53 loss to SIUE at the SIU Arena Monday night.
The Salukis trailed by one at the half and the contest was tied 42-42 after three quarters. SIUE's Nakiah Bell hit two heavily-contested three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to open the fourth quarter that broke the game open and gave the Cougars the lead for good.
"Those were the daggers," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said of Bell's two fourth quarter three-pointers. "Those were two really contested shots. One was over (Kylie) Giebelhausen and I think the other was over (Kristen) Nelson. (Bell) is a great player and she played very confident. That is what experience can do for you. That's where we have to get to."
Makenzie Silvey led the Salukis with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting while Kylie Giebelhausen finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Giebelhausen became the 25th player in SIU women's basketball history to reach 1,000 career points and the first to do so since Rishonda Napier in 2016.
"Its nice to have it out of the way," Giebelhausen said of scoring her 1,000th career point. "I always knew that it was there in the back of my mind so it was a little bit of pressure. But going into games it wasn't on the front of my mind, it was more about winning. I can't say that last game I needed to get it or this game I needed to, I just wanted to win."
SIUE was led by 18 points from Lauren White, who also added nine rebounds. Bell tallied 15 points of 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range and chipped in four assists.
With the loss, SIU falls to 3-2 overall while SIUE improved to 3-1 overall and have now won three-straight.
After the Salukis went the opening 7:15 without a field goal, a three-pointer by Giebelhausen cut SIUE's lead to three, 8-5. The Cougars responded with an 8-2 spurt and led 16-7 at the end of the first.
SIU was hampered by 11 first-half turnovers, but trailed by just one, 24-23 at the half.
The Salukis picked it up in the third quarter, as they opened the frame with an 11-3 run that gave them their largest lead of the game, 35-27. White and Bell, however, kept the Cougars close, as White scored nine points in the third period and Bell's three-pointer with :10 seconds left in the frame tied the contest, 42-42.
SIUE opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run, keyed by Bell's two high-arcing three-pointers, that built a lead that proved insurmountable. The Salukis got to within two with :09 seconds remaining on a 3-ball by Silvey, but a layup by White off an inbounds pass from Bell sealed the win for the Cougars.
The Salukis embark on a two-game road trip beginning on Thursday, Nov. 30 at Morehead State. Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m. (CT).
