HAMMOND, LA. – The Salukis were back on the softball diamond early this morning to play Army for the first time in school history. Southern Illinois won the game, 7-0, as Savanna Dover pitched a seven-inning shutout with nine strikeouts.
SIU started the day continuing their hot hitting from the day before. Susie Baranski led the game off with a single, followed by a Shaye Harre walk. Haley Andrus then smacked a three-run homer to give the Salukis a 3-0 lead. Andrus finished the weekend batting .500 and leading the team with seven RBIs.
On the hill, Dover retired eight of nine batters the first time through Army's lineup, only allowing one base runner through three innings.
In the top of the fourth the Salukis had more fireworks at the plate to extend their lead. Sydney Jones went deep for her second home run of the tournament to put SIU up, 4-0. Jones was one of five Salukis to finish the weekend with a batting average over .300, and one of six to hit a home run.
The bottom half of the fourth went one, two, three again for Dover. Not until the fifth inning did Army get anything going on the base paths. The Golden Knights started the fifth with two strikeouts, bringing their No. 8 hitter into the box. She and the No. 9 hitter got back-to-back hits to put runners at second and third. Dover remained poised, retiring the next batter to get out of the jam.
In the seventh, Baranski singled to start the inning. The next batter was pinch hitter Bailee Pulley, who drew a walk. With runners at second and first, Merri Anne Patterson launched a bomb to right center field, making the score, 7-0. The home run was Patterson's second in as many days.
Dover returned to the mound in seventh and finished on a strong note, striking out two of three to end the game. She pitched 12 innings over the course of the weekend, picking up two shutout victories, while holding batters to a .220 average.
